Children should be kept home from school when:

  • They have a fever > 100 degrees orally.  Fever usually indicates an infectious process, often contagious. Acetaminophen(Tylenol) and Ibuprofen(Motrin, Advil) reduce fever but do not effect the underlying condition -> the fever goes away but they're still sick!
  • They are vomiting.
  • They are coughing continuously.
  • They have a continually runny nose with yellow/green discharge.
  • They have a contagious illness.
  • They are feeling too ill to attend to school work.

I try to track contagious illness within the school.  It is very helpful if you keep me informed of strep infections, scarlet fever, staph infections, chickenpox, impetigo, pnuemonia, etc., so that we can take measures to protect the other students.
